Ouçamos o estalar dos dedos de Julius Gabriel... and 1 and 2 and 1, 2, 3...

- TRANSLATION -

Maybe the name was improvised at the last minute. They are the Cosmic Messengers of Julius Gabriel but they look more like the Tropical Messengers.

They enter the room Passos Manuel beating on rattles and more ratttles. And that's how the show got started, the show of the seven. Seven, the number of totality, perfection, consciouness, intuition, spirituality and will. Julius Gabriel (saxophone and composition) joins Hugo Ciríaco on the saxophone, João Mórtagua on the saxophone, Susana Santos Silva on the trumpet, Filipe Teixeira on the doublebass, José Marrucho on drums and Pedro Melo Alves also on drums. No one is left behind. Every one of these musicians leads a distinct career and has taken portuguese Jazz on to the next level.

Normally, Jazz is expected to be an open door for improvisation, however there are music sheets spread all over the stage and that are read by the musicians. Song sheets that were written by Julius Gabriel. Besides playing saxophone, Julius Gabriel presents himself as a conductor and he gestures the entrances and exits of each and every musical instrument and their intensity. The connection between all the musicians is evident but there is space for the individual within the collective. All the musicians shine following the same path. "Avocado" begins in a fanfare style following a rhythmical base with small variations, that transport us to the tropics but we also pass through ambiances of more traditional jazz. There are two drums with different languages, while one of them gets lost on the tribal rhythms, the other shows us a more classical kind of jazz. If school needs books, Porto needs shows like these to make us feel renewed. Fortunately, today we see a younger generation bringing color to jazz and to its different kind of fusions. The relaxed and without pretense kind of way of the Messengers managed to cause a smile and a sense of belonging in this musical universe.

Let's hear Julius Gabriel's snapping of fingers... and 1 and 2 and 1,2,3...
