Num concerto já com lotação esgotada dias
antes, o “Aquário” encheu-se para assistir ao duo inglês Sleaford Mods. A banda de
Nottingham, constituída por Andrew Fearn (beats) e Jason Williamson (voz), é
uma das duplas mais sui
generis da cena musical atual. Em palco, Andrew, de
baseball cap na cabeça e lata de cerveja na mão esquerda, mantém-se
discretamente abanando o corpo dois passos atrás do seu laptop, enquanto Jason
evolui com seus gestos e volteios enchendo o espaço. Nos beats electrónicos de
Andrew sente-se uma forte influência do punk e sobre eles o rap de Jason,
violento e enérgico, quase de hooligan e num sotaque regional muito cerrado,
vai passando mensagens de forte intervenção social. O desemprego, a crise
económica, os problemas da working class. Mas por vezes o que parece pode não
ser. Como Jason confessou em entrevista recente, ele nunca fez parte, de facto,
da working class. Passou por lá, mas quis sair rapidamente. O que fica são
histórias do quotidiano, o denunciar das injustiças, a ausência de esperança no
futuro e a acomodação que ela traz. Independentemente da intenção original das
letras, o que importa é o que o recetor delas retira. Mesmo atendendo à
dificuldade de abarcar tudo o que é falado, cantado e por vezes gritado, a
energia está lá e satisfaz. Um grande concerto que, apesar de curto, penso ter
enchido as medidas a todos os presentes. Por mim, poderia ter durado a noite
toda: “Andy, press enter one more time”.

Punk with a Beat
In a gig that sold out the tickets days before the event, the “Aquarium” was filled to watch the british duo Sleaford Mods. The Nottingham band, formed by Andrew Fearn (beats) and Jason Williamson (vocals) is one of the most sui generis duos in the current music scene. On stage, Andrew, with a baseball cap and a beer can on his left hand, acts a bit reserved, shaking his body lightly two steps behind his laptop, while Jason fills the space with his gestures and posture. In Andrew’s electronic beats we feel a strong punk influence and above those beats Jason’s rap, violent and energetic, almost of a hooligan kind and with a very strong regional accent delivers messages of strong social activism. Unemployment, the economic crisis, the problems of the working class. But sometimes what appears may not be what is true. In a recent interview, Jason has confessed that he was never part of the working class. He was briefly part of it but quickly left. What remains are the day to day stories, the denunciation of injustices, the absence of hope in the future and the consequent accommodation that it brings. Regardless of the original intent of the lyrics, what really matters is what the listener learns from them. Even though it’s difficult to absorb everything that is being spoken, sung and sometimes screamed, the energy is there and it satisfies. A great concert that despite being short, left the audience satisfied. For me, it could have lasted all night : “Andy, press enter one more time”.
