V.A: Self Discovery for Social Survival (OST)

Género: surf rock
Álbum: Self Discovery for Social Survival
Lançamento: 14 de Junho, 2019
Editora: Mexican Summer

Genre: surf rock
Album: Self Discovery for Social Survival
Release: June 14, 2019
Label: Mexican Summer

The soundtrack for surfing had its roots at the end of the 50’s through bands like The Shadows that united their rock n roll leanings with the distinct sound of twangy, relaxed and with some echo type of guitars that became the trademark for surf music. Later, in the 60’s the Beach Boys came along with their vocals sometimes in chorus that enrichened this musical genre.

The highest point of surf music was the 60’s even though there is still revivalism of the genre, particularly in soundtracks like in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

SELF DISCOVERY FOR SOCIAL SURVIVAL is the collaborative effort of several musicians, surfers and a director whose purpose was to value the practice of surfing, taking us on a journey through Mexico, Maldives and Iceland.

This project was born from the combination of ideas and creativity of the record label Mexican Summer and Pilgrim Surf + Supply that desired to create an audio and visual recording of men’s union with nature and the surfer with the waves.

The filming took place in real time and the music was created afterwards to highlight the power and beauty of the images, however the music achieved life of its own, surviving well beyond the images.

The bands and musicians that are part of this OST are: Dungen, Allah-las, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Connan Mockasin, Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT) and Peaking Lights

Most of the songs are instrumentals and they roam around surf music, psychedelic pop and chillwave.

The documentary was directed by Chris Gentile and the narration is by the legendary filmmaker Jonas Mekas, that unfortunately passed away in January of this year having 93 years old but leaving an impressive legacy in the seventh art.

It’s a collaborative work of high aesthetics that illustrates the relationship between men, nature and his social and cultural setting.
