Era talvez um dia como tantos outros. Talvez soalheiro, mas rotineiro e cansativo como quem passou uma manhã inteira nas finanças. As perspectivas que o dia melhorasse não pareciam optimistas e nem nisso se pensava. No entanto, após chegar a casa e vasculhar o armário de dvd’s do meu pai, houve um em particular que chamou a atenção e que ainda não tinha visto. A lombada dizia ICKY FLIX.

Tinha 16 anos, e com a arrogância particular da adolescência, achava que já tinha visto e ouvido tudo, apesar da curta estadia no planeta Terra. Nos primeiros segundos, apercebi-me que estava a ver algo que me era inteiramente alienígena, mas, ao mesmo tempo, estranhamente familiar. Foi aí que conheci os The Residents. Uma banda de São Francisco que trilhou o seu caminho bravamente pela vanguarda da música experimental.

Iniciaram a sua prolífica e extensa carreira com o LP, MEET THE RESIDENTS em 1974. A capa chamou a atenção por ser uma sátira à capa do LP Meet the Beatles da famosa banda pop de Liverpool, mas o conteúdo musical foi o que mais gerou interesse.

A música que pulsa da aparelhagem constrói um portal que nos remete para outra galáxia. O nosso cérebro e ouvidos adaptam-se quase naturalmente a uma nova forma de fazer e sentir a música. Há certamente influências de Frank Zappa e Captain Beefheart na sua abordagem livre de criar música, mas há também uma identidade muito própria. Electrónica rudimentar, percussão caseira e trechos apaixonados em piano. É toda uma linguagem muito particular que define e desflora a planta selvagem que são os Residents.

Ao longo de cerca de quarenta anos de carreira, conseguiram sempre ocultar as suas identidades, no entanto, em 2011, um dos fundadores do grupo, Hardy Fox revelou a sua verdadeira identidade, assim como Homer Flynn, também ele um dos compositores da banda. Hardy Fox acabou por falecer após uma longa e dura batalha contra uma doença oncológica.

Alguns dos seus vídeos estão expostos em museus de arte moderna e as suas explorações criativas também afloraram o mundo dos jogos de PC com um jogo chamado The Residents: Bad Day on the Midway lançado pela Inscape em 1995.

O seu imaginário lírico abrange vários temas, tais como religião, morte, filosofia, cantilenas infantis e outros ainda mais crípticos e obscuros. Movimentando-se por vários géneros musicais com a sua identidade forte e carregada, a sua força criativa nunca se conseguiu limitar apenas a um médium de expressão, criando um mundo completamente à parte no qual continuam a ser residentes permanentes.

O seu último trabalho de originais foi lançado em 2018 e apelidado de Intruders, onde o som psicadélico, fantasmagórico, nonsense e por vezes soturno, continua a cativar e a defini-los como uma das forças mais criativas da música de vanguarda.

It was perhaps a day like any other. Maybe sunny but uneventful and tiring like those days that we spend the mornings at the local IRS office. The expectations for the day to get better didn’t seem hopeful and were even unthinkable. However, after getting home and browsing my dad’s dvd’s shelf, there was one dvd in particular that caught my attention and that I haven’t seen yet. It said ICKY FLIX.

I was 16 years old and with the particular arrogance of adolescence thought that I had heard and seen it all, even though my brief stay in Planet Earth. In the first seconds I realized that I was watching something that was entirely alien to me but also strangely familiar. That’s when I met The Residents. A band from San Francisco that walked boldly through the trails of experimental music’s vanguard.

They started their extensive and prolific career with the LP, MEET THE RESIDENTS in 1974. The cover art aroused attention for being a satire to the LP cover Meet the Beatles of the famous Liverpool pop band, but the musical content was what was really interesting.

The music that pulses through the stereo builds a portal that sends us to another galaxy.

Our brain and ears adapt almost naturally to a new way of thinking and playing music. There are certainly some Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart influences in their free approach to create music, but there is also a very particular identity. Rudimentary electronics, home-made percussion and passionate passages in piano. It’s a very particular language that defines and deflowers the wild plant that is the Residents.

During the course of 40 years of career, however in 2011, two of the founders of the group, revealed their identities as Hardy Fox and Homer Flynn. Hardy Fox unfortunately succumbed to cancer after a long and hard battle.

Some of their videoclips are at museums of modern art and their creative exploits also reached the pc game world with a game called The Residents: Bad Day on the Midway released by Inscape in 1995.

Their lyrical imaginary approaches some themes, like religion, death, philosophy, nursery rhymes and other more cryptical and obscure themes. Moving along several different music genres with their strong identity, their creative force could never limit itself to just one medium of expression, creating a world in which they are still permanent residents.

Their latest original work was released and 2018 and called Intruders, where the psychedelic, haunting and spooky, nonsense and somewhat somber sound still captivates and defines them as one of the most creative forces of the avant-garde music.
