Junto a uma jukebox um casal de adolescentes trocam um olhar tímido enquanto bebem um refresco. Vários jovens entretidos contam histórias numa mesa rodeados de garrafas vazias de refrigerantes. Podia ser uma das visões que o nosso imaginário alcança quando meditamos sobre as décadas de 50 e 60 do século passado. Uma altura vital para o pop soalheiro imiscuído do vibrante rock n roll. Bandas como The Beatles, The Byrds, Beach Boys e até Love dominavam os gira-discos dos quartos de vários adolescentes em diversos continentes.
The Azenas evoca esse sentimento nostálgico em plena contemporaneidade. O quarteto de jovens britânicos muniu-se dos discos dos seus pais, ouviu-os provavelmente até à exaustão e criou o seu próprio som, que é uma autêntica cápsula temporal, levando-nos aos tempos de outrora das baladas sentimentais sobre a descoberta do amor na adolescência e o maturar constante e doloroso da adolescência com os seus problemas e inseguranças.
O seu mais recente EP intitulado Shifting Sands é composto por quatro canções que nos recordam que há certos contextos temáticos na área das emoções que são completamente intemporais. A banda viu o seu som mais encorpado com a inclusão entusiasta das teclas de Edward Simons, que se tornam fundamentais no tema, Right Time. Os vocais continuam a cargo de Archie Noble com uma compostura melódica e grave que suportam a dinâmica “feel good” das líricas. As guitarras de Archie Noble e Tom Stewart distendem-se em momentos bem dispostos que nos lembram, por vezes, a dimensão melódica de Beach Boys. É em Right Time que encontramos os momentos mais exploratórios da banda, com a bateria dinâmica de Luke Hawdon a acompanhar os arremessos mais vibrantes das guitarras e teclas que criam uma atmosfera quase de jam session que encerra o EP que é uma autêntica viagem no tempo para aqueles que sentem falta da musicalidade vibrante de outros tempos, mas que continuam presentes no imaginário e repertório musical de muitos.

Near a jukebox a couple of adolescents exchange shy looks while they drink their sodas. Several youngsters are cheerfully telling stories at a table filled with empty soda bottles. This could be one of the visions that our imaginary brings up when we meditate about the 50’s and 60’s. A vital era for summery pop mixed with vibrant rock n roll. Bands like The Beatles, The Byrds, Beach Boys and even Love played on the turntables in the bedrooms of various teenagers in several continents.
The Azenas evokes that nostalgic feeling in our contemporary age. The quartet of young British musicians, gathered their parent’s record collection, listened to them exhaustively and together they created their own sound that is an authentic time capsule, taking us back to the time of sentimental ballads, about the adolescent’s quest and discovery of love and the constant pains and tribulations of teenage to adulthood.
Their most recent EP titled Shifting Sands is composed of four songs that remind us that certain thematic contexts in the arena of emotions are ageless. The band has a more bold sound now with the inclusion of enthusiastic keyboards by Edward Simons, that become a central piece in the song, Right Time. The vocals are still by Archie Noble that with a melodic composure support the feel-good characteristic of the lyrics. The guitars by Archie Noble and Tom Stewart distend into summery moments that remind us, sometimes, of The Beach Boys. It’s in Right Time that we find the more exploratory moments of the band with the dynamic drums by Luke Hawdon that accompany the vibrant flings of the guitars and keyboards creating an atmosphere of a colourful jam-session, ending an EP that is a time travel for those that miss the vibrant musicality of past times that are still present in the imaginary and musical repertoire of many.
